Black & People of Color

CULTURE, CONTEXT AND MENTAL HEALTH

Mental Health Recovery Is A Journey, Not A Destination

According to the National institute of mental health, racial and
ethnic minorities are significantly less likely to receive mental health treatment.

Cultural beliefs, expectation, norms, taboos and upbringing
influence who we are, how we think and therefore the mental health care system
for people of color need to be examined within that context. As an
Afro-Caribbean American woman, I understand that the intersections of
race, ethnicity, culture and sexuality needs to be considered in the therapy
process. The ability to find a licensed mental health professional that has the
knowledge to help people of color engage, explore and evolve is essential for
better well being. I offer a place where cultural context is honored, speaking
your truth is validated, trust is achievable and increased belonging is
possible.
